As an Anglican church
Church of the Spirit belongs to the worldwide family of churches called the Anglican Communion. Originally this was just one connected group of churches called the Church of England. Now the Anglican chuch is made up of a large group of semi-autonomous bodies of churches who work hard to mainatain a common faith and practice across cultural lines.
As an Anglican Church we are connected to the catholic faith, though we are not a Roman Catholic church. At the same time, we are connected to close to 80 million people around the world who call themselves Anglicans. In this country Anglicans are most often members of the Episocpal Church, but there are other Anglicans in the States who are connected to churches from overseas.
What was at one time a largely Anglo church, made up of Englishmen and women is now very diverse. There are in fact more Anglicans in Africa than there are in England; there are more people of color in the Anglican Church than there are caucasians.
Why bother being part of a larger family? Certainly as in any large family, there are members who don't get along very well. There are bound to be conflicts and differences in practice and belief. The benefits of being part of the Anglican Communion are many, including:
- a connection to others around the world who share our faith
- a chance to look beyond ourselves through our sister church in Tanzania
- a foundation in the catholic faith ... our leaders do not have the freedom to change what we say we believe, and have believed since the start
- the strength of pryaing with others around the world, and of working to serve the needs of the world by marshallingt the combined resources of millions of family members
- a sense of history and stability dating back to the earliest centuries of the Christian era
